Cast Iron Pipe Problems in Older Dallas Homes
Pre-1975 Dallas homes often have deteriorating cast iron under the slab. Here is what fails and what to do.
How cast iron fails
Sulfuric gases corrode the top of the pipe while the bottom channels out, creating 'scaled' and splitting lines with a 50–70 year lifespan.
Neighborhoods most affected
Midcentury housing stock in Oak Cliff, Casa Linda, Lake Highlands and Preston Hollow is reaching the end of original cast iron life.
Repair paths
Descaling followed by epoxy or CIPP lining restores the pipe from inside; severe sections are replaced through tunneling.
Many corroded cast iron drains can be restored with a no-dig pipe liner instead of jackhammering floors.
