When a spot repair makes sense
If a camera inspection shows one isolated defect — a single offset joint, one root-penetrated coupling or a short cracked section — and the rest of the lateral is sound, repairing that point is the most economical fix.
Dig-and-replace vs point liners
A small excavation over a sonde-marked defect lets a few feet of pipe be cut out and replaced with PVC and shielded couplings. Where digging is impractical, a short cured-in-place sectional liner seals the defect from inside.
When it is the wrong choice
Multiple defects along an aging cast iron or clay tile line usually mean the next failure is close behind. In that case lining or replacing the full run is cheaper over the life of the home.
