Who Is Responsible for the Sewer Line in Dallas: Homeowner or City?
Where homeowner responsibility ends and Dallas Water Utilities takes over, and how to confirm it for your property.
The private lateral
In Dallas the property owner is generally responsible for the building sewer — the lateral running from the house to the connection with the public main — including any portion under the yard and driveway.
The public main
Dallas Water Utilities maintains the public sanitary sewer main, typically located in the street or an alley easement. Problems in the main are reported to the city through 311.
Confirming your tap location
A camera inspection with locating shows where your lateral meets the main and whether the defect is on your side. That footage is also useful when talking with the city or an insurer.
Once you know the private section is yours, replacing the lateral becomes a planning decision instead of a surprise.
